Max advises indie studios, developers, publishers and platforms across the video game sector on a range of regulatory, commercial and intellectual property matters.
“Day to day, I negotiate publishing and development agreements and draft playbooks and policies for content clearance, marketing and community engagement for clients of all sizes, from indie developers to AAA publishers. I also work closely with in‑house legal, product, trust and safety, and compliance teams on the launch and live support of complex online games, including user‑to‑user features and UGC.
I have particular expertise in regulatory frameworks impacting video games, including online safety laws, age-assurance and verification requirements, age appropriate design and requirements around user-generated content and engagement techniques. I also advise on monetisation and advertising issues including in‑app purchases, virtual currencies, loot‑box‑style mechanics, dark patterns and recommender systems.
I’ve completed three in‑house secondments with a leading international publisher, supporting complex licensing negotiations, advising on the development and live support of a AAA title, and helping to design and launch user‑to‑user features within a complex international regulatory environment.
Outside work, I’m a passionate gamer across video games, board games and tabletop games, an occasional skydiver and a coffee enthusiast.”
